The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has taken a significant step to celebrate the legacy of cricketing icons by naming stands at the iconic Wankhede Stadium after notable figures. This decision was finalized during the MCA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on April 15, 2025.
Among the honorees is a celebrated Indian cricket star, with the Divecha Pavilion Level 3 now designated as a tribute to his remarkable contributions to the sport. Additionally, the Grand Stand Level 3 will honor a prominent former MCA leader, while Level 4 will commemorate a legendary former Indian captain known for his leadership and skill.
The MCA also paid a touching tribute to a former president who passed away during his tenure. The match-day office at the MCA Pavilion has been renamed as a lounge in his memory, reflecting his dedication to Mumbai cricket.
According to the MCA, these initiatives underscore their commitment to preserving the heritage of cricket while fostering its growth. “The decisions made today are a testament to our respect for those who have shaped Mumbai’s cricketing legacy. These stands and the lounge will serve as lasting tributes to their contributions,” said MCA President Ajinkya Naik.
In addition to honoring cricketing stalwarts, the MCA announced plans to bolster grassroots cricket. The corpus for affiliated clubs has been increased to Rs. 75 crores, with a vision to raise it to Rs. 100 crores in the coming years. This move aims to enhance infrastructure and promote the sport’s development across Mumbai.
These efforts highlight MCA’s dual focus on celebrating the past and building a vibrant future for cricket in the city.
